I think a large part of what makes Nochnoy dozor (Night Watch) such a great film are the dynamic subtitles. I have to mention that when I talk about this movie since they’re so amazing. It’s similar to Underworld, but with a better soundtrack, better effects, and a more complex story other than werewolves vs. vampires.
I’ve heard that the American theater release of the sequel, Dnevnoy dozor (Day Watch), took the subtitles to another level, but the recently released American DVD version is missing those. This version has the standard static subtitles like any other movie. Why?? That’s what I was looking forward to.
Dnevnoy dozor is still a good movie – the story goes off in another direction and there aren’t as many action sequences – but I think it would have a great movie with the subtitles I keep reading about. I hope they plan on another release in the future.
